How to Style Your Curls at Night, Revamp!

We get a fair amount of hair questions every day and thought this one that Jess answered might be helpful to some of you out there. :)

Jenny Asked:

I have watched your demo videos and noticed that you style your hair right after you wash and condition it. However, I usually wash and condition my hair at night. In the mornings, if I were to start out with dry clean hair and then wet it so it is soaking wet and then style, would the products work the same? Or is it better to wash and condition my hair in the morning before I style? Thank you for your help!

Here's Jess’ Answer:

Yes, it’s totally fine to just wet it in the morning and then style as usual. You might find you need a bit of leave-in conditioner to help with slip, but maybe not, depending on your hair. If you want to fully style your hair the night before and sleep with it curly, it’s possible to do, though a bit trickier. :)

The best bet there is to let it finish drying all the way before you go to bed but don’t scrunch it out. Let it stay crunchy when you go to bed; that extra crunch will help preserve the curls overnight as you sleep. I recommend a silk or satin pillowcase for us Curlies since our curls glide over it more smoothly than cotton and stay intact better.

In the morning, just scrunch out any lingering crunch and you’re on your way. It won’t look as perfect as when you style it freshly in the morning, but your curls will hold stronger, no doubt. :) I do this sometimes when I’m flying out early the next morning and don’t want to take the time in the morning to do my hair.

Extra Curly Tips:

📌Our Awe Inspiraling Refresher Spray is perfect for those days when you’re short on time and just need a little curl boost. A couple of sprays and a few scrunches make it look like it took more than 5 minutes to do it. All the perks in less than half the time!

📌There are several nighttime accessories that are beyond helpful in preserving curls and maintaining their strength. Jess mentioned a silk (ours are vegan) or satin pillowcase, and there are tons more options, too! Vegan silk scrunchies that don’t leave that annoying crease regular hair ties do after hours of holding hair in place, silk or satin bonnets that help minimize frizz and breakage by preventing friction against any Or, a good in-between for shorter Curlies, silk or satin scarves to wrap hair before bed.

📌If you wonder why there is such an emphasis on silk or satin in the curly hair community, it really all comes down to the way our hair grips onto the material. Cotton and silk are different fabrics, whereas satin is a weave of any material. Silk is much softer than cotton, making it so our curls are moving on a smoother, more delicate surface. However, silk can be on the pricier side, which is where satin is helpful. The smooth and silk-like texture of satin can provide similar benefits as silk products for a lesser cost.

📌Protective hairstyles such as braids, the pineapple pony, or a classic top-head bun are easy and reliable go-to sleep styles! And, if you absolutely have to go to sleep with damp hair, a braid might give you a different set of curls in the morning! Just make sure you’re not tugging your hair too tight when doing these styles. Over time, that could cause breakage at the follicle and potential hair loss. We don’t want that!

Whether you prefer styling in the morning or at night, sleep soundly knowing these tips will keep your hard earned curls intact. Just think of it as an extra step in a self-care routine; taking the time to prep your hair for sleep makes it so you can spend less time refreshing those curls in the morning. With those extra minutes, you have more opportunities to appreciate how good your curls look!
