As we enter a new year with new ideas, aspirations, and hair goals for some of us, It can also be a time of reflection, which got me thinking: What would I tell myself if I were just starting out?
I started my healthy hair journey nearly 6 years ago, and I can remember the first 6 to 12 months being overwhelming and see so many give up on their natural texture during this period.
Here are my tips for keeping your new routine simple and manageable until your hair has settled into its new era!
Double Cleanse - Scalp health will be the key to your curls flourishing and producing healthy, strong hair! Always double-cleanse to thoroughly remove dirt, oil, product build-up and any other impurities from the hair strands and scalp. The first wash lifts surface-level debris, while the second wash penetrates deeper for a more complete cleanse, allowing the shampoo to deliver its ingredients into the inner layers of the hair. This leaves the hair feeling fresh and optimally prepared for styling products.
Distribute Products Evenly - If you don't distribute products evenly, your hair could have uneven definition, more frizz than normal, and reduced volume. When applying styling products, brush or comb them through, lifting the hair up and away from the scalp.
Moisture v. Hydration: Know the difference - While you need to hydrate and moisturise, Understanding the difference between these two essential needs of curly hair is a game changer! Hydration comes from water and applies to the inner layers of the hair, whereas moisture pertains to the outer layer/cuticle. It regulates that water by sealing it in. Trying to hydrate your hair with products that moisturise only could result in over-moisturised, limp, flat curls.
Don't Fear Frizz - A little frizz is normal in any environment. Trying to eliminate frizz entirely is unobtainable and unrealistic. However, unnecessary frizz can be managed with proper styling techniques. The sooner you learn to live with a bit of frizz, the sooner you will embrace it!
Invest in a Satin or Silk Pillowcase and Scrunchie - I have never been able to sleep with a bonnet and still keep my nighttime routine simple. I pop all my curls into a silk scrunchie on the top of my head and sleep on a silk pillowcase. This Reduces friction—Silk’s smooth texture glides against your hair cuticles, reducing tangling, frizz, and breakage.
Join a Curly Community - Connect with others who have curly hair to share tips, advice, and support. I found this through Instagram, an excellent source for finding curly friends, and I hope you will find that here, too!
