How to Style for Volume

I’m a “the bigger, the better” kind of girl when it comes to hair, and if I'm pushed to choose between volume and definition, I’ll always choose volume! While I am lucky in that I have a good amount of hair, which ultimately helps when trying to achieve volume, there are so many key things you can do throughout your routine to help you reach your volume goals!

CLARIFY - While you may think it’s essentially down to products and drying techniques that help create volume, not cleansing correctly will suppress your volume potential. Starting with a clean and well-balanced scalp and strands will keep your hair's health on track and remove product buildup from anything that’s gone before (including minerals if you live in a hard water area). This will allow anything you lay down on your hair to do its job correctly afterwards. This is an important factor when trying to achieve weightless, healthy hair with volume; ideally you should clarify with a shampoo like Jessicurl’s Clarifying Shampoo at least once a month!

STYLE & DIFFUSE UPSIDE DOWN - I honestly believe this is the biggest reason why I get the volume I do. I apply most of my products upside down and ensure I've lifted the hair up and away from my scalp before I go in for any definition. By styling this way, when you return your hair to an upright position, you have naturally encouraged the hair to fall back on itself, causing a lift effect at the root area.

DIFFUSE OVER AIR DRYING - Once hair is wet, you can mould it back into a new shape, but once that hair is dry and hydrogen bonds form in a new position, it's almost near impossible to change it. Therefore, if we air dry and the hair dries flat to our scalp area, you will not get the lift/volume you desire. Diffusing will lift the hair off the scalp and set it in place with heat. If you can do this upside down, too, it’s even better! If you don’t like to diffuse, try doing this for a few minutes to help lift and set your curls/hair at the scalp area, then finish air drying.

CLIP & TEASE YOUR ROOTS - Root clipping is another way to help create and set volume. Claw clips (small or large) work great. Position these in the crown area by lifting the hair up and off the scalp and remove them when fully dried to reveal a lift at the crown area. Once the hair has dried in its new position, to help it have staying power, take a pick comb and spritz with hairspray going in at the root area, lifting the hair up and away or alternatively, place the pick at the roots and lift the hair off the scalp then mist some hairspray as you lift to hold it in place.
