Technique Over Trends

Do you feel like every few months, there’s a new curl trend? A new application method? a viral styling routine? The list can seem endless!

While experimenting can be fun (I still do!), It's important to remember that constantly jumping from trend to trend can quietly disrupt your consistency. The truth is, healthy, defined curls are built on mastering the basics.

Trends Can Inspire but not Replace Foundations

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with trying something new. The curl world has evolved massively thanks to shared techniques and education. However, problems arise when:

  • You abandon what was working because something new looks better online
  • You change your entire styling method every few weeks
  • You judge your results before allowing repetition to work

Hair thrives on familiarity. When you constantly change techniques, your curls don’t get the chance to settle into a rhythm.

What “Technique Over Trends" Really Means

It doesn’t mean ignoring new ways or being afraid to try something new, it means asking:

  • Does this technique suit my hair density and texture?
  • Is this trend solving a real concern I have?
  • Or am I changing things because I feel like I should?

Winning at wash days comes from repeating a method long enough to understand:

  • How much product does your hair needs?
  • How wet your hair should be when styling?
  • How long it takes to dry?
  • How your curls respond to touch, heat, and layering?

Consistency Builds Better Results

When you stick to a technique for several wash days in a row, you start noticing patterns:

  • Where your hair needs more hold?
  • Which areas frizz first?
  • How your products behave together?

This understanding gives you control, and builds confidence in what your hair needs, along with what you're doing. Jumping from trend to trend often keeps you in a cycle of “almost there” instead of actual progress.

Signs You Might Be Chasing Trends Instead of Refininf Technique

  • You rarely repeat the same routine twice
  • You’re constantly trying “viral” methods
  • Your results feel inconsistent month to month
  • You feel like you’re always one product away from perfect curls

Try a Technique Checklist

Instead of trying something new every wash day, try working through tried and tested techniques like the ones below:

  • Use less leave-in conditioner - Applying too much can stop your curls from forming properly and leave your hair feeling soft but undefined.
  • Apply products to wetter hair - Styling on soaking wet hair can improve clumping and help distribute product more evenly.
  • Focus on application method - Techniques such as praying hands, glazing or scrunching can make a huge difference in how the product coats your strands.
  • Section your hair when styling - Ensures every part of your hair receives equal moisture and hold.
  • Adjust how much you scrunch - Over-handling during styling can break up curl clumps before they’ve had a chance to set.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the latest trend, but for me, it’s technique over trends every time.
