Water is your curls’ love language... learn how to seal it in!
H2O is your curls’ love match! Period! Water (H2O) is essential for maintaining healthy, defined curls. It provides the necessary hydration to prevent frizz and keep curls looking their best; put simply, curls thrive with adequate moisture from water!
Now we know water is the key to maintaining the health of our curls, how can we ensure we retain it?
These simple tips will ensure we seal and lock that hydration in:
It Starts in the Shower - Once the hair shaft is saturated, we want to close the cuticles to keep as much inside as possible! This is where your conditioner plays a huge part. The main job of a conditioner is to smooth down and seal the raised cuticle scales so the nutrients and water that have entered stay there. Ensure you’ve fully saturated the mid-lengths to ends with conditioner before rising. You can also leave a little in if you have a thicker or coarse hair type.
Don’t Be Afraid to Add More - If your hair becomes damp before or during styling, grab a spray bottle and spritz it with water to keep it wet.
Add Moisture - Applying a curl cream before you apply gels or products that provide significant hold will lay down a barrier to lock in hydration so water can’t escape. Again, focus on the mid-length to ends, where the hair loses moisture quicker and can become dry.
Finish Strong - By following the above steps, we’ve laid down a good barrier, and now we want it to stay. gel is the product for this job! Creating a hard cast around the curl provides a protective shield, keeping our curls adequately hydrated until next wash day!
