Caring for Little Curls

by Chief Educator Claire

It can be difficult to know how to care for children’s curls, especially if you don’t have curly hair yourself or if it's a completely different density and texture to yours.

We want kids to love their curls and believe all little ones have the right to remain curly!

*All Jessicurl products can be used on children aged 3 years and over.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

A long, complicated wash day with multiple steps isn't needed. Invest in a sulfate-free shampoo, silicone-free conditioner and a curl cream for those who need a styling product to define and hold their curls.

📌Curly Tip: Washing 2-3 times a week for little ones with fine/wavy hair and 1-2 times a week for coily/thicker hair is a great bench mark.

DETANGLING WITHOUT THE TEARS

To avoid tears and tantrums, always detangle when the hair is wet and with lots of conditioner. Never try to detangle when the hair is dry. A high-quality conditioner with a lot of slip will be your savior!

📌Curly Tip: You can leave the conditioner to sit on the hair for a few minutes if the hair is super knotty. This will help soften the hard knots and start to break them down.

DRYING

This is a matter of personal preference. Whether you air dry or diffuse, do not let your little one go to bed with wet hair. A moist scalp can be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus, potentially leading to scalp issues.

If you diffuse, do this on low to medium heat and medium speed.

📌Curly Tip: For diffusing, get your little one to lay on the bed and let their hair hang off the side.
