Creating a Cast

by Chief Educator Claire

When crunchy curls are a good thing...

Creating a strong cast helps to give you the best definition possible, prevent frizz and make your wash day last longer. The 'crunchy' layer around each strand binds hair together, holding your curls in place.

If you are struggling to get a cast, there are a few steps along your styling routine that you can check to see if this is maybe why you aren't getting the perfect crunch!

WET v SOAKING

Ensure your hair is wet and fully saturated but NOT soaking. If it is too wet, your hair won't absorb product properly and will be weighed down.

GO EASY ON THE CREAM

Again, too much moisture will stop absorption and weigh your hair down; when it comes to leave in's and cream-based products, sometimes less is more.

We recommend starting with a pea size amount of leave-in or, for cream-based products, about a nickel size.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE 'PLOP'

If you like to plop your curls or waves, do this before applying your gel or final styler so that the cotton towel doesn't absorb the product that will create the cast.

LOCK IT IN

Use a lightweight styler to finish off your styling routine. A gel is generally best as this often gives a very defined, stiff feeling that keeps moisture and everything you laid down before locked in.
