Squish to Condish

by Chief Educator Claire

Wavy hair is sometimes thought of as failed curls due to its subtle curl pattern and often treated as unruly straight hair that must be flat ironed into submission. Wavy hair IS CERTAINLY a type of curly hair, and as such needs to be given a fair shot to shine in its own beautiful right!

Let's break down a technique that can help achieve beautiful defined waves (also works great on tighter curls too!)

A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG WAVIES

The problem I hear repeatedly is that those with wavy hair have no distinction between their waves. The key to fixing this problem is not only taking better care of your hair and its health but also to encourage clumping.

SQUISH TO CONDISH?

This technique involves squishing conditioner into the hair with water. This provides intense moisture while defining the curls at the same time. Pushing water and product into the hair cuticle will help curl formation and clumping your waves together.

HOW TO DO IT

Once you've cleansed & conditioned (and rinsed out), flip your head over while still in the shower and squish in additional conditioner. It is like scrunching, except you want to use a flat palm and try not to squeeze out all the water. What you are looking to achieve is the perfect water-to-conditioner ratio.

Doing this traps the water within the hair, and the conditioner seals it in. This is something that will take trial and error. Start with a small amount of product until you find the perfect squish!
