Curls and fabrics — have you ever thought about how well they really go together?
Many of us turn to cotton or some kind of poly-blend when we’re out sheet shopping, but how do the fabrics in our lives affect our curls? If you’re thinking, “well, how big of a difference could a pillowcase or sweater fabric make?” you’re in for a surprise!
First things first, let’s be clear on the difference between silk and satin. Silk is a material produced naturally, whereas satin is actually a kind of weave - meaning, any fabric can be satin. So, why are these two always grouped together? Because satin, no matter the material, is often sleek and smooth enough to act as a sister to silk and can be substituted while still providing those same benefits.
And why should you care about that? Because when we sleep, our curls are constantly pressed against those fabrics! And as we toss and turn, curl enemy #1 - friction - is causing our curls to lose shape, get frizzy, become more prone to breakage and some fabrics can even inhibit hair growth. Things us Curlies would rather avoid so we can keep our locs absolutely curlicious!
Not only that, but fabric choices also matter midday when we are most active! During fall & winter, we often switch over to cozier clothing - but when was the last time you considered whether your outfit & curls would get along? Everyone loves a good chunky knit sweater or scarf, but curls simply don’t love the friction.
Okay, we’ve gotten into why it’s important. Here’s a few ways to embrace the fabrics!
Pillowcases
A silk or satin pillowcase is, in my ever-so-curly opinion, the true first step in prioritizing curl health! Think about it — the average person spends at least 6 hours laying their heads on a pillowcase. Switch out your non-curl friendly fabric for satin or silk and take notes on the difference before and after!
Hair Ties and Scarves
Switching out those tight, rubber hair ties for some silk or satin scrunchies is going to change your hair right away. No more crease lines from the tie and far less breakage when you’re taking curls out, too! Silk or satin scarves are also going to reduce friction against strands and do not soak up oils or product from curls the way other fabrics might!
Bonnets and Lined Caps
If you’re deeply attached to your sheets — totally get it, some things are perfect as they are — you can always still protect your curls with some nighttime hair protection! Slip on a silk or satin bonnet, or a cap that is lined with either fabric, and drift away into dreams of bouncy, healthy curls! Pair with any of the above for double curl coverage!
Protective Hairstyles
Sometimes cozy fabrics simply can’t be avoided and the best thing to do is to throw your curls into a bun or braid, pop on your favorite wool sweater, & head out for your adventure in the cold. If you do, we highly recommend using a claw clip or a curl friendly fabric scrunchie.
Caring for curls is an all day activity, and the fabrics we use are key to long-lasting, soft and bouncy curls! Treat your curls to silk or satin — they deserve it and you do, too!
